Ok I'm just too lazy to post my settings on these. I didn't get allot of outdoor shots but I did get some from inside Rural King. And the last photo is my sweet puppy Nola who is 14 weeks old.

BTW I'm SOOOOO LOVING this lens (Sigma 30mm 1.4). Best thing of all is I did very little editing to these photos. Stop by again to see more and new photos in 2009.

Indiana Countryside Part 1

While out driving the countryside of Southern Indiana I came across this barn. And it just screamed out to me so I had to stop the van and take a photo of it. I did my normal editing on this and something didn't feel right about it. Like it was missing something so I tried some other editing my b&w and with actions. I guess what throws me off is the yellow green grass.

Awhile ago I was offered a Lightroom book and I just had to pay for shipping. After I received the book I emailed Alexis Miller about how she wanted me to pay her. Eliana's Eye Appointment

Today Eliana had her bi-yearly appt. with the pedi opth. Dr. E said if she wuld wear her glasses it does correct her eyes crossing. But she refuses to wear them as she says they hurt. I honestly thinks it's because she is not used to them being on her face. So, to her they hurt. Eliana is scheduled for surgery on January 19, 2009. This is her 2nd eye surgery & her 3rd surgery all together & she just turned 4 last Friday.

Happy Birthday Eliana!!!

Four years ago today at 9:37am Eliana was born. She had some health issues and came home when she was 6 days old.

This photo was taken the day she was born. You can't see it in the photo. Eliana was in an Oxy Tent for the first 3 days. I had a friend make me this snow globe.

I turned it to PW's B&W Beauty to hide some of the noise. The photo is not technically correct in a photographer's world. But it's the precious moment that I captured that I will treasure for years to come.

Photo Slump

Unknown Soldiers

I saved the best photo for last. This week's theme while being spooky just makes us look back and remember those who are no longer with us. I like this one so much I may have to get it printed and hang on the wall. At Highland Lawn Cemetery they have an Unknown Soldiers section. It was a round drive and surrounded by hundreds of Unknown Soldiers grave stones. I stood looking down to this section and below was a different section as well as across the street. I did my basic editing then ran Pioneer Woman's Vintage action twice on it.

As you can see this is the mausoleum of John G. Heinl. And their is a story behind John G. Heinl and Stiffy Green. I will post it below the photo for you to read. I did my basic editing then ran an action from Kubota called Hot Fudgier.

JOHN. G. HEINL, the well known florist of the city of Terre Haute, is a native of Austria. In 1854, when he was ten years old, his people emigrated to the United States. In 1856, two years after his arrival, he worked for three years with a florist, of Toledo, Ohio, with whom he remained for seven years. In 1868 he came to Terre Haute and engaged in the business on his own account, which he has continued until the present, making for him in all about twenty-three years' experience in the avocation. His gardens and hot-houses are located at No. 19-29 North Eighth street, where he is occupying a space 140x140 feet, all of which is utilized in growing some of the finest and choicest plants and flowers that are to be found in the city.

In connection with his establishment on Eighth street, he has a farm of forty acres, located a short distance southeast of the city. This is also used for gardening and growing plants and smaller varieties of nursery stock. Since eleven years of age Mr. HEINL has been dependent upon his own resources, both in acquiring an education and property. How well he has succeeded in the latter may be determined by a view of his splendid property on Eighth street, where he is usually to be found, pleasant and courteous, and ready to explain to visitors the name and nature of the different varieties of plants.

John G. Heinl died on New years eve 1920.

And the story of Stiffy Green.

They say that there is nothing unusual about hearing a dog barking in a cemetery at night, unless you happened to be in Terre Haute, Indiana. If you are anywhere in the area around Highland Lawn Cemetery at night, and hear a dog bark, you may just be hearing the legendary voice of Stiffy Green, Indiana’s favorite graveyard ghost.

In the early 1900’s, Stiffy Green was a familiar character around Terre Haute. He was the constant companion of a man named John Heinl, an elderly gentleman who was well-liked in town. He too was familiar figure as he strolled about the city each day in the company of his little bulldog. Stiffy Green was so named thanks to his unusual, stiff-legged walk and the fact that he had startling, green-colored eyes. The little dog was friendly, yet fiercely protective of his master, never allowing strangers to get too close.

In 1920, John Heinl passed away. While his death was a cause for sadness in the community, no one was hit harder by it than Stiffy Green. The poor creature was heartbroken and he refused to leave his master’s side, even during the funeral services and after Heinl was entombed at Highland Lawn. Eventually though, two of Heinl’s friends decided to take in the dog and care for him. They took him to their house in Terre Haute and introduced him to his new home.

Within a few days, Stiffy Green had gone missing. He was found a few hours later lying in front of the door to the Heinl mausoleum, silently watching over his master’s burial place. John’s friend placed a leash on the dog and took him back home again but less than a week later, the dog was missing once more. He was always discovered again, several miles away, in the cemetery. Over the next month or so, this became a standard routine. If the dog could not be found around the house anywhere, his new owners always knew where he was. Eventually, they just gave up and let Stiffy Green take up residence in the graveyard. They brought him food and water and allowed him to stay there.

Not long after this, they began to realize that the dog was not eating. He paid little attention to the bowl of water either, preferring to sit nearly motionless at the entrance to the tomb, barring anyone from entering it. He stayed there in the rain and cold and never shirked what he seemed to feel was his duty. And it was there, on the cold stone step, that the body of Stiffy Green was eventually found.

As word of the loyal dog’s death spread, Heinl’s friend pondered what to do with the animal’s body. They certainly didn’t want to simply dispose of their friend’s constant companion but they weren’t certain he should be entombed as a human would be either. Finally, they reached a compromise. A fund was established and the dog’s body was taken to a local taxidermist. The dog was then stuffed and mounted into the sitting position that he had maintained outside of the tomb for so many months. His eyes were left open and his bright green eyes were replaced with glass ones that managed to capture the gleam of the originals. When the task was completed, Stiffy Green was placed inside of the Heinl tomb, right next to the crypt that held the remains of his beloved companion.

And seemingly, this would be where our story ends... but it’s not.

Several months after Stiffy Green’s death, a caretaker was leaving the cemetery on a warm evening. Just as he was opening the door to his car, he heard the bark of a dog from the direction of the Heinl mausoleum. Thinking that something about this seemed odd, he decided to go and have a look. As he neared the tomb, the sound got louder and then he suddenly realized why the bark seemed so strange, and so eerily familiar. He had heard this dog barking before. It was the bark of Stiffy Green!

But that was impossible, he realized, the poor animal had died many months ago. The bark must have been his imagination, he decided and walked back to his car. He would think no more about this until other people started to report the same barking from the area around the tomb.... and they would report something else too.

According to the legends, many people have heard the barking of a small dog in Highland Lawn Cemetery in the evening hours. It always seems to come from the direction of the Heinl mausoleum. A few of them have also reported that Stiffy Green does not wander the cemetery alone. They also claim to have seen the figure of an elderly man strolling along between the tombstones, sometimes smoking a pipe and sometimes just smiling as he looks away into the distance. While the old man’s description sometimes varies, the witnesses never disagree about the fact that he is always accompanied by a small stiff-legged bulldog... with piercing green eyes.

A Rose Confused

Near the duck pond are 2 small rose bushes. One is a dark fushia rose and the other is red and yellow. I believe mother nature forgot to tell the roses that it is now fall time.

But who can blame the roses as it's 82 degrees outside. And Thursday through Monday it's going to be 65-71. Hard to believe it is mid October with this great weather.

This rose is just starting to open up. And on the bush are 2 more buds that will start opening in a few days.

I only got this one shot of the rose as it's a bit windy out right now. I'll try again a bit later for more photos when the wind dies down.

CC on Red Hues & Contrast

A couple weeks ago, I changed 2 settings on my camera. I decreased the red hues and increased the contrast. Can you let me know if I need to decrease the reds more. Is the increased contrast too much or should I decrease it a tad? Here are 2 photos that I just took today. Sorry it's boring scenery and technically incorrect. I just snapped 2 photos for the purpose of red hues and contrast. I know the ground is a bit dark.

Both photos are SOOC. No resizing. No sharpening.

Although Hurricane Ike has already hit it did not hit as hard as they had predicted. But it sure is affecting our gas prices. This morning Frankie had a football game. After the game we stopped for gas. But on the way to the game I snapped this photo of a gas station we were passing.

We stopped in Leopold Indiana to get gas for $3.75 a gallon. And we were lucky to not have to pay what the gas station above was charging. The owner said that in Kentucky they called a state of emergency as gas was raised to $4.99 a gallon.

Eliana's First Day of Preschool

Since today was Eliana's first day of preschool I thought I'd share a few photos she let me take. Literally all she gave me was 2 minutes and she was ready to go. She kept saying let's go mommy we are going to be late for school. Unfortunately she wants to go back tomorrow and school is only Monday and Wednesday's. Eliana's wanted to go to school a year ago but the cutoff prevented her from going last year. Next year she will be in her 2nd year of preschool and start Kindergarten in 2010.

I was sitting here looking at which reflection photo to post for tonight. And I decided I was going to post off theme tonight. We went to Petersburg today and found this very colorful butterfly lollipop in a small antique, collectible, scrapbooking store. Eliana just had to have it then begged for a photo of her & the lollipop. We stopped near the fire station and found some shade. Eliana squints very bad in sunlight as she has sensitive eyes like me.

Also, thought I'd post this for my dad to see. I've been slacking on emailing photos of Eliana to my family. I know shame on me. But life keeps us busy sometimes. Dad thought you'd like to see one of Eliana. And have a safe trip home next week. We hope to come home and visit soon. We love you. My dad has been in Kuwait since February and is finally coming home next week.

A Fisherman's Boat

All this week's photos were taken in the pond that Duck lives in. The pond has a small fence around it as the landlord did it for safety reasons. He knew if he rented the house to a family with kids it was a good idea. We do have another pond further back on the property and it takes a good 10 minutes to walk too. Maybe I'll get back there this afternoon and see what photos I can capture.

The family that owns this property (30 acres) consists of 9 siblings and their families. They still use the barn, farm the land and use the property for fishing. Needless to say sometimes it seems busy around here but everyone stays to themselves. These are the best landlord's I've ever had. Another 10 minute walk from the house is a shelter house which they use for family gatherings and the grandkids use for parties and such. They even dedicated a stations of the cross just past the shelter house for their dad who died about 2 years ago. I think I'll walk back there today for photos as well.

First off I want to apologize for the title of my photo. I'm still not feeling well & couldn't think of anything creative. Yesterday, I mentioned Duck wouldn't let me take a photo of him/her. I did a USM, slight contrast boost & ran Jess' Vintage Action. This is the same little pond on our duck swims in here on the farm. Duck was not being friendly for a photo today so I opted for corn.

Waterball Part 2

Here are a few photos from the actual waterball contest. The first team is Ireland Volunteer Fire Department. The second team is Hayesville Volunteer Fire Department. In the last photo I captured a surprise. A metal ball is attached to a wire cable. The point of the contest is to get it to the other side. They have yellow markers on the wire and when you pass each one if gives the that teams seconds instead of points. The team at the end about 4-5 hours later with the most seconds wins. We did not stay the entire contest as the kids wanted to go home. I think we watched an hour of waterball.

Last weekend was Strassenfest. It's a German Festival they have in Jasper, Indiana the first weekend every August. Friday night they have a Waterball Contest. Fire Fighters from around the area compete for this contest. I don't really think their is a prize it's just recognition for the next year. The contest goes on for about 4-5 hours. We were sitting on the grounds of the fire station and the first 2 groups were going up to compete. I took this shot of a Ireland Fire Fighter before he went in to compete with his team. I am processing more photos from the festival so I will share more Waterball photos tomorrow night.

I used my 85mm 1.8 lens and he was the perfect distance for me to get this shot. ISO 100, SS 1/160, Fstop 5.6. I did a USM and slight contrast boost. On the first photo I ran a Cookies & Cream action by Lori Cox from The Candy Shop. The second photo I did my standard color editing.

A Rose ~ B&W vs Color

Since I sold my 24-70L 2.8 I bought one of the lenses to replace it. I'm waiting for the other to be in stock again. This is my first Macro photo with the 100mm Macro 2.8 lens. ISO 100, SS 1/500, and Fstop 5.6. I did a USM and a slight contrast boost. How did I do for my first macro?

Well it rained most of the day today. And when it wasn't raining their really was nothing but a cloudy sky. So, I decided to go back and PP a photo from June, 25, 2008. I used my 85mm 1.8 lens, ISO 100, SS 1/250, and Fstop 5.6. I did a USM, contrast boost and ran a vintage action on it.

Corn, corn, corn. It's all around right now. I stood right at the end of the corn and took a photo. Not sure if this really classifies as sun flare but I gave it a try. I used my 85mm 1.8, ISO 100, SS 1/200 and Fstop 5.6. I did a USM and a slight contrast boost.

And I wanted to say Thank You to Heidi (from 2 Peas) for making me this gallery action. I still need to make a text brush to go along with it. But it is so much faster then 20 minutes doing it step by step.

For Sale - Canon 24-70L 2.8 ~~ SOLD

Well it seems I'm really a prime girl at heart. So I need to sell the Canon 24-70L 2.8. It's a great lens but just isn't for me. It does not have any scratches on the lens or the body. I will sell it along with the lens hood and bag, the original box and warranty card, both front and back lens caps.

I'm thinking of getting the 50mm 1.4 and the 100mm 2.8 Macro. I could always use lens suggestions. I'm thinking the 50mm 1.4 for indoors & outdoors and it'd go good with my flash once I learn to use it. And I really like getting up close and personal with flowers and etc so thought the 100mm 2.8 Macro was a good choice. The only thing I'm not sure of is would the 100mm 2.8 Macro be good enough for getting close ups of marching band competitions in a high school football and college stadium?

Sorry I'm not a product photographer. And just noticed I got a fingerprint on the front of the lens. B&H sells it for $1190. I'm asking $950 shipped PayPal. I ordered this lens from B&H on February 14, 2008 and have used it 5-6 times. If you have any questions just leave me a comment here on the blog.

Eliana and Frankie in the Parade

We went up to Northern Indiana for the holiday weekend. Eliana and Frankie got to ride in Papa Miki's squad car with him in the parade.

First photo I took in the driveway before we got to the parade and you can barely see Eliana in it. Second photo was during the parade and Eliana is sitting on Grandma Sue's lap.

And right after I took it we got the kids out of the car so they could watch the rest of the parade themselves. I'm slowly getting through all the photos I took from the weekend. I'll post them as I can.

I've been getting ready and packing for the holiday weekend. We are going to Northern Indiana and will return Sunday evening. My mom is meeting us in Northern Indiana to spend 2 days with us then head back with Eliana for a week. Eliana doesn't know yet that she gets to spend a week with Oma (grandma in German). She'll be SO excited.

Tomorrow we'll be going to a parade. Eliana and Frankie will be riding in a police car in the parade. Then tomorrow evening we'll see more fireworks as we just some some last Saturday. We'll also be spending time with Brett's family as they are having a reunion this weekend. We'll be back Sunday evening.

I'll get back to posting and some photos up on Monday. Have a good weekend. Happy 4th of July!!!

Eliana being Patriotic in Her New Glasses

Took these really quickly once we got home from the dr's. Today we picked up Eliana's new glasses. She is doing so so with keeping them on. She says they hurt and make her itch. I know it's just talk for her not wanting to wear them.

The first one is with the sun to the NW. ISO 100, SS 1/320, Fstop 5.6 shot with my 24-70L. I did a USM and a slight contrast boost. The second one is in the shade. ISO 100, SS 1/80, Fstop 5.6 shot with 24-70L. I did a USM and a slight contrast boost.

What are your thoughts on the glare from the glasses? Any way to improve these for the next time? These photos aren't perfect in composition so don't pay attention to that. Eliana didn't want anything to do with having her photo taken which only took about 2-3 minutes.

The Flag

When we were at the beach on Saturday the had fireworks and 2 bands playing at the beach house. They had set this flag up as the first band played allot of patriotic music. The reason I don't have the whole flag is that people were walking. And I didn't want anything in the photo except the flag as the main focal point. ISO 100, SS 1/500, Fstop 5.6 and shot with my 24-70L at 45mm. I did a USM, 2nd photo Jess' Hazy Days and 3rd photo B&W. Which one do you like best? Do you think it's worthy enough for an Art show? Our photography class has a Americana Show coming up this year.

Friday's Storm

Friday evening we had a pretty bad storm rolling in. Brett's Fire pager went off for the signal for the warning siren for the county. Weird things is we never heard the siren itself. I called a friend in Jasper which is 20 minutes away. She never heard it either.

These photos are SOOC. No PPing whatsoever. The first photo is towards the North. The second and third photo are towards the West. The fourth photo is towards the North again. I took these from the back driveway.

Eliana Painting

Eliana wanted to do some painting so we went outside. Where it was easier to clean up a mess if one was made. I'm glad to say their was no mess. ISO 100, SS 320 & 400, Fstop 5.6 and shot with my 24-70L. USM, slight contrast boost, and a slight curves boost.

And the final painting. She wanted to give it to Frankie. She said I hope Frankie likes this. While I was uploading and PPing photos she decided to cut it up. I'm still going to have her give it to Frankie next week when he comes to visit.

I was going to straight this but couldn't find it in CS3 for the life of me. Someone let me know where to find it so I can straighten it out. Thanks!

This is one of the few remaining roses on the bush that are still intact. I like the comp but wanted a vintage look to it and just couldn't come up with one I liked. ISO 100, SS 1/640, Fstop 5.6 and shot with my 24-70L. USM, and a slight contrast boost.

Actually this one was taken awhile ago during our Flower week I believe. I did a bunch of stuff around the house today and ran 2 errands. That's another whole story gggrrr. So, I didn't have time to take any photos today. ISO 100, SS 1/2000, Fstop 2 and shot with my 85. USM, slight contrast boost and I may have run an action on it. I can't remember as I had done the PPing one I took the photo. This lovely flower is at my friends house near the lake.

This is Duck. Eliana named the duck Duck. We had a small snapping turtle for a week and she named it turtle LOL. We only have one duck in the small pond. Maybe next year we can get some baby ones from Rural King so Duck can have some friends. He is quite friendly and comes near you when you talk. ISO 100, SS 1/500, F5.6 and shot with my 85. USM, slight contrast boost and Jess' Warm Sunshine.

Eliana kinda freaking out walking in the corn. I told her to go walk through it that it was ok. And she slowly did as if it were going to bite her or something. The house we are renting is on a farm. The landlord still farms it so we have corn, cows and a barn. Just capturing a snapshot of her and the corn to show how high it is right now. ISO 110, SS 1/320, F5.6 and shot with my 85. USM, slight contrast boost, touched up the redness in her face a bit and Jess' Warm It Up.

There is a door inside the barn (it's open through & through in the center the barn that is) and it's blue inside. We we walking to go see Duck at the pond and it's blue on the outside as well YAY. I love the expression on her face. ISO 11, SS 1/320, F5.6 and shot with my 85. USM, slight contrast boost, touched up the redness in her face a bit and Jess' Soft Faded Tshirt.

I ventured outside my box today. I've been trying to shoot 1.8 - 2 but on these I did 5.6. My NON people portraits are good at 1.8 - 2 but people were so so. How did I do? Looking for CC on Fstop and composition.
